I hope everyone had as much fun as I did at the Open House for Mrs. Golding and Mrs. Frace. I want to thank Susan Phillips for organizing the event and the many people who brought food, drinks, memories, and warm smiles. In saying good-bye and wishing well the people who help make Cashell special, we are reminded of how great a community Cashell is.

Cashell Renovation Update
Dennis Cross from MCPS tells us that all demolition permits are in place and we await the next obvious sign- 'the short, black fence' AKA the sediment retention fence. Demolition is expected to commence by the end of May. Hopefully, we'll get word when the bulldozers will start so we can urge them on.
May 4th
PTA Meeting
Our next meeting is May 6th at 7:30 pm.
We've invited Dennis Cross, from MCPS to update us on what is and will be happening during the Cashell renovation. We'll also be electing the PTA Officers for next year.
Our neighbors from Cherry Wood and Norbeck Meadows are also invited to hear Mr. Cross, so car pooling is strongly recommended in light of the limited parking options at our temporary home.
Childcare will be provided.

After School Drama Program Input Request
From County Council PTA:
"Last year MCCPTA-EPI (the organization that provides FLES, HOS, and the
cultural arts showcases) conducted a survey of local PTAs to find out what
other types of after school programs EPI might develop. In response to the survey,
MCCPTA-EPI is in the beginning stage of developing an after school drama program.
The program developer would be interested in getting input as to what things you
would want in this type of program.
Please respond to Karen James, kboches@erols. com if you have any
suggestions. You may also forward this email to any parents that you know
have expressed interest in this type of program. At this point the program
will likely be aimed at ES students, but input from middle schools is also
welcome."

Principal Selection at Redland
The Redland principal, Carol Weiss, recently announced that she is retiring.
We received this notice from from Beatrice Hanson, Redland PTA President:
Tomorrow Evening, Monday, April 21st @ 7:00 p.m. in the Redland Middle School media center there will be a very important meeting for the parent community to provide input in the selection of a Principal for Redland Middle School . Adrian Talley, Montgomery County Community Superintendent will be outlining the principal selection process and discussing the parents’ role on the actual interview team.
We will be asked to fill out a needs survey, for Principal Leadership Skills. These survey results along with the teacher surveys and the community superintendent’s observations will determine the candidates for the upcoming interviews.
The needs survey is in the form of a scan-tron, with the following 13 choices:
Promotes high student expectations
Maintain a good school climate
Makes changes based on needs
Involves parents
Communicates well
Provides instructional leadership
Promotes professional growth
Has effective interpersonal skills
Believes in participatory management
Is accessible
Maintains staff balance
Uses resources well
Maintains continuity
You will be asked to choose the top 5 that are important for the Redland community. Please contemplate which 5 characteristics would be most important in serving us.
There will also be an opportunity to write in any characteristic needs that are not covered in the list above.
There will be an opportunity for parents to serve on the interview panel. Anyone interested will be asked to fill out a form. These parents are chosen by Mr. Talley.
I can not tell you enough how important this meeting is. The number of people in attendance will make an impact on Mr. Talley as to how important we feel about getting a Principal who meets the needs of our community.
Thank you and I do hope to see many of you there.

We'll keep you informed as more information becomes available.
See what you can learn at your PTA meetings? :-)
Public Servant Tab on Your PTA Web site
It's been said that the 'A' in PTA should stand for advocacy. We've put a tab on our PTA web site (http://cashellpta.net) to make it easier to contact the Board of Education, Montgomery County Council, MD Delegates, and MD Senators. Your current public servants email addresses or links to their addresses are listed. (I hear they love to get email.) There is also a link to find out which legislative district you live in. Many thanks to Damon Riley, our web master, for putting this together.

Maryland Senate Legislative Action
From Jane de Winter MCCPTA President:
Hello all- The Maryland Senate is on the verge of passing a tax credit bill
which amounts to being a voucher program. National PTA has a very strong
position against such legislation. Not only would this bill use public
money for private school, it has a price tag of $5 Million dollars! Public
education is suffering cuts to funding, and we cannot afford to subsidize
private parochial school for a select few students. Please contact your
Senator by phone or email to let him or her know that PTA and its' 200,000
members in every jurisdiction DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BILL! To find your
Senator's contact information, go to http://mdelect.net/electedofficials/ to find a legislator.
You will have to put in your address to get the info, then email or call!
The more members they hear from, the better. Thanks for your help!
